MansField Fun Fly!
By Mike Phillips

On Saturday March 4th the Mansfield Hawks RC Club had their Club Fun Fly and I was invited to enjoy a day of fun with some really great folks, eat some really good food and just simply put, enjoy a great day of flying and company.

The Mansfield Hawks RC Club doesn't mess around when they hold a Fun Fly, these are complete with lunch and lunch it was! Two grills, and I can still see these two gentlemen slaving over these grills as if their right to fly RC Airplanes were on the line. Delivering food to a bunch of hungry RC Pilots isn't an easy job as I found out on the 4th of March watching these gentlement put out hamburgers and hotdogs to everyone at this flying field.

Doug, our local combat pilot, you know Doug, he is the one always trying to get you into a combat plane so he can chase your streamer! Even going as far as working you great deals on blue core built aircraft ready to except your gear. Doug invited me out for this great day of fun to do some combat flying with the great group of guys at the Mansfield club.

The combat sessions went very well, they were organized and also had some really good twists and turns. We had 3-4 sorties on this day with a few mid air collisions, streamer cuts and over all knee knockin excitement. These arent your every day combat pilots, they are there to get streamers and you better run or you will lose yours!

Not only did they have their combat guys out there, but also had an open field for RC Pilots to get out there and I took my U-Can-Do 60 so I could also fly the glo planes (and not miss a great day for flying glo as I rarely do). The UCD flew great and had her share of flights through out the day.

Many other Mansfield RC Club members were at the flying field for their fun fly as well with a wide assortment of Gas and Glo planes.

About the runway, what can I say? As a Renegade, I run all over the place where I am invited to enjoy local area club fields and must say, these guys are very innovative, the runway is made from a material used in construction and landscaping to hold loose ground in place, a tough material stretched out in a a runway/pitt area that works great! Its not like flying off of grass and is as close to asphalt as your gonna get without the price tag. From what I gather, this runway was about an 8th of the cost of laying down any kind of asphalt or concrete and works just as well.

The Mansfield Fun Fly events consisted of the Combat sessions (which I participated in along with Doug and several other pilots) and another game I had never heard of, Arial Golf? or possibly RC Golf? What a riot this is, using a golf ball, golf club and an RC plane you have to follow some rules and are timed.

Summed up, RC Golf works like this, starting on the runway you take off, clear the end of the runway by 100+ feet and anywhere (within the flying area) you complete 3 rolls and three loops, Land on the runway keeping your plane straight you kill the motor and wait for your plane to stop. You then pick up the golf club and golf ball and run to and touch your plane on the runway, drop the ball right there and take your first swing toward the hole marked with the flag. You hit it until you get it in the hole. The best time from start to finish wins the match!

RC Golf was really fun to watch, you got to see all sorts of things in the air, some planes made for the loops and rolls, and others that arent. Some pilots that want to fly high to do their stunts and others that like to fly low. This game should be included in any fun fly for any club as it was a riot to watch as a spectator and I am sure it was even that much more fun to participate in.

The guys and gals at the Mansfield Hawks RC Club can put a Fun Fly's together and from my point of view as a guest, they are very friendly and are excellent hosts. I plan to be at their next fun fly, after all, when you have a great time like that, regardless of how far you drive its only like counting down the days until you can get back out there and do it again.

I would like to personally thank the guys at the Mansfield Hawks RC Club and Doug for getting me out there for a great day of fun, RC Flying and great food.
